The Development Impact of Low Cost Bandwidth – Opportunities for Africa

The Ghana-India Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in ICT is pleased to invite you to a Technology Transformation Seminar on Monday, March 1st from 2-4pm.

John Hawker based in Thailand, will share his first hand experience of the planning and deployment of the world’s first pure IP satellite, iPSTAR. He brings his experience of the impact that access to low cost internet brings to rural areas in Asia and the related opportunities for Africa. iPSTAR brought VSAT to rural Asian communities at one-tenth the cost of regular VSAT. Broadband at below $100 per mbps enabled many economic opportunities for Asian countries covered by iPSTAR. The in-depth explanation of this transformational solution; from the social benefits, the failures and technologies involved will be detailed.Europe and USA are now deploying pure IP satellites and Africa is positioned to do the same. This lecture is a must for anyone wanting to see the future of ICT access and benefits.

IDLELO is one conference for FOSS practitioners, developers and advocates as well as governments to showcase results, share experiences and challenges, review progress on the continent in diverse domains and chart a way forward for an African future grounded in true ownership of technology. IDLELO is therefore a premier international forum for the presentation of research results in Free and Open Source Software(FOSS) in Africa.

From May 17-21, 2010, FOSSFA is holding the Fourth Conference on FOSS and the Digital Commons in Accra, Ghana. This event gathers the brightest minds in FOSS, including developers, distribution maintainers, business leaders, end users, system vendors, other community organizations and government official. It is the only conference designed to encourage sharing, collaboration and encourage solutions by bringing together a true cross-section of leaders to meet face-to-face to tackle and solve the most pressing issues facing FOSS on the African Continent today.

ghNOG -2 WORKSHOP ANNOUNCED

The Executive Committee of ghNOG and Internet Society Ghana Chapter have re-announce
the ghNOG-2 workshop and meeting. The event will take place from the 15 -19 March
2010 at the Ghana Telecom University, Tesano Accra. The workshop is a UNIX Systems
Administration course and is open to technical persons who manage networks in

The meeting which will be on Friday, 19 March, 2010 will forcus on strenthening the
Internet Infrastructure in Ghana. There will be updates from several members of the
Internet community including GISPA. ghCERT, ISOC Ghana  and the sub-marine fiber
optic providers as well as an update of the state of the national fiber backbone.
The general public is invited to the meeting. Admission is free.

For the last four years, OneWebDay has attracted a global network of partner organizations and individual activists committed to broadening the public’s awareness of Internet and Web issues while deepening a culture of participation in building a Web that works for everyone.

In 2008, OneWebDay organizers documented volunteer-driven events 34 different cities across the world. In 2009, the OneWebDay is gearing for events in over 50 cities in 20 countries!

Sir Timothy John “Tim” Berners-Lee meets Internet Community in Ghana

It is informed for the benefit of the Internet Community in the country that Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the British engineer, computer scientist and MIT professor credited with the inventing the World Wide Web, would be arriving in Ghana this weekend as part of a four-nation African tour.

The Kofi Annan ICT Center (KACE) will host the renowned Professor at 2:00pm on Monday 21st September, 2009 with many experts from the Internet Community in Ghana.

The statement indicated that it will be happy to see members of the Internet fraternity come to the KACE to share knowledge on W3C and other matters of common interest.

The wikipedia describes him as follows;

He is a British engineer and computer scientist and MIT professor credited with inventing the World Wide Web, making the first proposal for it in March 1989. On 25 December 1990, with the help of Robert Cailliau and a young student staff at CERN, he implemented the first successful communication between an HTTP client and server via the Internet. In 2007, he was ranked Joint First, alongside Albert Hofmann, in The Telegraph’s list of 100 greatest living geniuses. Berners-Lee is the director of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), which oversees the Web’s continued development. He is also the founder of the World Wide Web Foundation, and is a senior researcher and holder of the 3Com Founders Chair at the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL).
